BËLNY DOM

Holiday rental for 8 people.

Kashubia region in northern Poland.

Bëlny Dom / Bëlny HOUSE

Bëlny House is in the region of Kashubia in northern Poland. Known as Kaszuby in Polish, Kashubia is a cultural region whose inhabitants are Kashubians and the language spoken – after Polish – is Kashubian. Road signs are written in both Polish and Kashubian.

Bëlny means gorgeous in Kashubian, and this was our first impression when we saw the house and the countryside around it.

The house is part of the rural village of Przytarnia, in the protected Wdzydze Landscape Park. It looks onto forest and is surrounded by trees, lakes and fields. The nearest beach, on Wdzydze lake, is a few minutes’ walk from the house.

To get to the house from overseas, fly to Gdańsk airport and then drive around 90 minutes west into Kashubia.

The house is spacious and cosy, finished with wood and heated by woodburners. It has a sauna and plenty of space for relaxing.

WHAT TO DO IN THE AREA

BEACHES

The closest beach, on Lake Wdzydze, is a five-minute walk from the house. By the beach, which is secluded and off the busier trails, there is a picnic table, a short pier and a spot for a bonfire. Motorsports and fast engines are forbidden on Lake Wdzydze, so you can swim peacefully, paddle on SUPs and kayaks, or fish.

There is a beautiful beach in nearby Wiele. Families with children will love this place because there are lifeguards and the water is shallow all along the shore, so the little ones can play without fear of going too deep

WOODS

The house is surrounded by forest – you can walk for hours and in these almost endless woods. In August and September the woods are full of Chanterelles which can be foraged as they are easy to spot. There are plenty of other mushrooms to be collected, but it’s best if you know what you’re looking for.

On a walk you may well encounter woodpeckers, red squirrels, ducks, geese and cranes, and if you’re lucky you might cross paths with deer. There are boar and beavers in the woods too, but they are harder to spot, and wolves are known to have been in the forest.

Nearby places of interest include a small viewing platform a short walk up from the lake, and the Przytarnia Tower, a 50-metre-high viewing platform from which you can see the five interlinked Wdzydze lakes which are scattered with small islands.

GOAT FARM

On the way to the village of Robaczkowo, you pass the Kaszubska koza (Kashubian goat) farm which produces award-winning cheeses. If you go with children, you can call in advance to see if the goats are there for the children to feed (+48 533 495 488). The cheeses come in a variety of flavours and are very good.

CYCLING

We are located on the “Kashubian loop” (Pętla Przytarnia) nature bicycle trail, a 21km route indicated on trail posts by red markings.

Józef Chełmowski’s House – brusy JAGLIE

Close to the town of Brusy, in the village of Brusy Jaglie, is the house of the late folk artist Józef Chełmowski, which is often a surprise hit with visitors. A visionary sculptor and painter, he was known as the Kashubian Leonardo da Vinci and is a leading figure of Polish folk art. Please call +48 889 969 071 to make an appointment. You won’t regret it.

kayaks, boats, paddleboards, paragliding and Bikes

We recommend a kayaking trip on the Wda River – or for beginners or those with small children, along the Wda River canal, which is calm and easy to kayak on.
Rent kayaks in Borsk at Pod Śluzą.

For the brave, paragliding can also be arranged in Borsk, where there is an airstrip.

You can rent pedal boats, sailboats, kayaks, paddleboards and various accessories at the beachfront Marina Largo in Borsk. Pod Śluzą in Borsk rents out kayaks, paddleboards and bikes.

Kashubian Ethnographic Park – WDZYDZE

At Wdzydze, the Kashubian Ethnographic Park is well worth a visit to explore the houses and settlements of the past being brought to life.

Boat trip – Wąglikowice

A one-hour boat trip around the lake, from the marina U Grzegorza in Wąglikowice, tel. +48 603 488 144

What Else?

The nearby Odry Nature Reserve has the famous stone circle known as the Kashubian Stonehenge.

The Bory Tucholskie National Park is also worth exploring.

Beautiful old wooden churches can be found in Karsin, Leśno and Swornegacie.

Kashubian Language

If you don’t speak Polish, identifying the local Kashubian language may be a bit of a challenge, especially as it’s not always easy to detect locally. A stay in Kashubia, however, is an ideal opportunity to get to know or deepen your knowledge about this region, its history, culture, local people and language.

shopping and eating

In Przytarnia village there is a small but well-stocked shop selling delicious, locally baked bread and cakes which are available in the summer season. Locally, you can buy goat cheese and farm eggs.

In Wiele and Karsin there are larger shops such as Groszek, Stokrotka and Biedronka. We recomend trying local honeys and smoked fish.

The house has a fully equipped kitchen and a large table for 10 people.

For local restaurants, we recommend Pod Gruszą in Wiele, Jasnochówka or Karczma Largo in Borsk, and Drewutnia in Olpuch
(call to check these places are open out of season).

Address

The Bëlny House is located near the village of Przytarnia
in northern Poland. It’s 90 min drive west from Gdańsk airport.

My name is Karolina and I own the house together with my family. I used to travel a lot around Kashubia not knowing much about the local culture except for the traditional local flower pattern and knowing that the region has its own language.

While studying anthropology, I researched the area, its heritage, history, culture and language. Kaszuby has become my place on Earth.

Bëlny Dom is now open for guests. It’s a place for taking a break from the busy life and spending time with family and friends. It’s a wonderful (bëlna) base for discovering the local area.
